A 1937 plane trip

Photo album

Photo album

The image above is a page from an old photo album that belonged to my grandfather, Hendrik van Kampen (1912-1997). On the page there is a photo showing a small airplane, and a ticket for a short flight over Amsterdam and/or environments.

Hand-written on the ticket is the plane registration number, PH-ALY, and the text F7, which probably means the plane was a Fokker F.VII (this is confirmed by this page, where the plane is listed as a Fokker F.VIIa, used by the KLM from November 1936 until June 1939).

My grandfather, 24 at the time, would not have put the ticket in his photo album if he had not used it, so we can safely assume that he took a flight in August 1937. And this was almost certainly the first flight ever by one of my ancestors.

Unfortunately, grandfather never told me about this flight, so I cannot tell you anything about his experiences. He probably did not take any photos during this flight (and if he did, they were probably lost).

The photo of my grandfather with a bicycle, by the way, is from the next page of the same album and dated 3 August 1937. Possibly on his way to or from the airport.

  1. I imagine that the trip would have been quite thrilling and fun to see Amsterdam from the air.
