Royal visit to Deventer, 22 August 1900
On Saturdays I rummage through my old cabinet, pull out and dust off an item, and present it here on Roots. Today: A souvenir of the royal visit to Deventer in 1900.
On 22 August 1900, Queen Wilhelmina and her mother, Queen Emma, visited and toured the city Deventer. After the visit, a souvenir guide with large photos was published, and a copy somehow ended up gathering dust in my cabinet. I inherited this souvenir guide from my grandfather, Hendrik van Kampen, but I don’t know how it came into his posession. In 1900, the year of the royal visit, he was not even born yet, and I am not aware of any connection between my family and Deventer.
The guide has ten large photos, with advertisements on the back of each photo. There is no text, except in the ads and on the front cover. The portrait on the front cover is Queen Wilhelmina. The title of the book is Souvenir aan het bezoek van H.H.M.M. de Koninginnen, souvenir of the visit of their majesties the queens.

Among the advertisements you can discover ads for a broodfabriek (bread factory), modemagazijnen (fashion shops), a bloemenwinkel (flower shop), a restaurant, a passenger steamship (stoomboot) that leaves for Amsterdam every Tuesday and Friday evening, and many others.
