Welcome to my new genealogy blog, The Graveyard rabbit of Utrecht and Het Gooi. This blog is a requirement for membership of the Association of Graveyard Rabbits. Members will investigate “the historical importance of cemeteries, grave markers, and the family history to be learned from a study of burial customs, burying grounds, and tombstones“, each in his own region.
The region I will cover is the geographical heart of The Netherlands: the province Utrecht and neighbouring region Het Gooi. Utrecht is the region where I currently live, and many of my ancestors lived and worked in Het Gooi. It is small enough so that I can easily reach every corner, but large enough to have plenty of interesting graveyards. The main cities of this region are Utrecht, Amersfoort, and Hilversum.
So, what can you expect from this blog?
The blog posts I am thinking of are photo impressions, histories of cemeteries, genealogical notes on people buried in my region, burial customs in The Netherlands, reviews of books and other websites related to the topic of this blog, and many other topics. Individual cemeteries or grave markers discussed in this blog will be located in Utrecht or Het Gooi, other articles may also discuss the entire country.
What I will probably not do is inventories of cemeteries. There are several cemetery inventory projects in The Netherlands, and I have no intention to compete with them, or to redo the work they already did. I will discuss some of these projects in later posts.
Comments, suggestions, corrections and questions are always welcomed. You can leave your comments here on the blog (there is a comments link below each post), or you can contact me.
I am looking forward to researching and writing for The Graveyard Rabbit. Thank you for reading, and please consider subscribing to this blog.
