Langgewenscht, Hilversum

Farm buildings at the Langgewenst square in Hilversum (or Langgewenscht, as it was spelled at the time). The photo was taken by my grandfather, Henk van Kampen (1912-1997), in November 1932. This view disappeared a long time ago, the square looks completely different...

The age of my grandparents

The age of my grandparents

My grandparents were roughly the same age, there was less than five years between the eldest and the youngest. The eldest was my paternal grandfather, Henk (Hendrik, officially) van Kampen. As the eldest son of the eldest son, I was named after him. Opa Henk, as we, the grandchildren, called him, was born on 9 November 1912. One hundred years ago today. My maternal grandmother outlived my other grandparents. Her name was Maria Theresia Coppens, but the grandchildren knew her as Omoe. She passed away earlier this year, on 13 July, 97 years...

Tombstone Tuesday: Van Kampen

I shared many graves from the Bosdrift cemetery in Hilversum on this blog. Today’s grave is special, at least to me: Twice I helped carry a coffin to this grave, in 1997 and in 2007. Buried here are two people that I have known well: My grandparents, Hendrik van Kampen Jr. and Alida Melessen. They were buried in a family grave with my great-grandparents, Hendrik van Kampen and Geertje Wiesenekker. I will not add any genealogical data here, as I already published plenty on this and other blogs and websites, with more to come. If you are...

Gathering dust: Veerstraat 21 in Hilversum

On Saturdays I rummage through my old cabinet, pull out and dust off an item, and present it here on Roots. Today: A photo of the house my grandfather was born. A photo of the house in which my grandfather Hendrik van Kampen was born (in 1912), with his father’s bicycle repair shop. The boy was an errand-boy employed by my great-grandfather, I don’t know his name. The photo was taken before 1915, when the family and the bicycle repair shop moved to a different location. The building seems to have disappeared, at least I...

Gathering dust: A photo

On Saturdays I rummage through my old cabinet, pull out and dust off an item, and present it here on Roots. Today: A photo. A formal portrait of my grandparents, Hendrik van Kampen and Alida Melessen. I have no further information on this photo. Possibly an engagement portrait from...

Gathering dust: More atoms

On Saturdays I rummage through my old cabinet, pull out and dust off an item, and present it here on Roots. Today: A few items from the 1957 exhibition The Atom. Last week I showed you a photo of the Queen and my grandfather during the opening of the exhibition The Atom. I have a few more items from the same event. Not a word on the official program about the presentation of the book on the official program. I only have the photo as proof that it really happened, and the receipt above. Looking at all these documents does leave me with a few...

Gathering dust: Atoms

On Saturdays I rummage through my old cabinet, pull out and dust off an item, and present it here on Roots. Today: A photo from the 1957 exhibition The Atom. On 28 June 1957, HRH Prince Bernhard opened the exhibition The Atom, in presence of his wife, HM Queen Juliana, and many other guests. The Atom was a major exhibition, highlighting the many blessings of nuclear energy. At the time, we did not know much about the risks and dangers. Highlight of the exhibition was a real, working, nuclear reactor. I found this short film about the opening...

Gathering dust: The engagement of Henk van Kampen and Lida Melessen

Gathering dust: The engagement of Henk van Kampen and Lida Melessen

On Saturdays I rummage through my old cabinet, pull out and dust off an item, and present it here on Roots. Today: An engagement announcement. This is the engagement announcement of my grandparents, Hendrik (Henk) van Kampen and Alida (Lida) Melessen. It mentions a change (wijziging), so possibly there was an earlier communication. Unfortunately the card does not mention the engagement date, only the dates of two receptions, one at each parental home: 4 February 1938 in Amsterdam, and the next day in Hilversum. The address on the cover is my...

Family grave (continued)

Yesterday I showed you a photo of the Van Kampen family grave that I visited earlier this week. This is the same grave in 1941, shortly after my great-grandfather Hendrik van Kampen was buried here, the first burial in this grave. The photos were taken by my grandfather, who is now buried there too. Note the grave stones on either side: They are still there today. The stone on our family grave was replaced when my grandfather was buried...

Family grave

Tombstone on the grave of my grandparents, Hendrik van Kampen and Alida Melessen, and my great-grandparents, Hendrik van Kampen and Geertje Wiesenekker. The grave is full now, so other family members will be buried elsewhere, when their time comes. The tombstone is from 1997, when my grandfather was buried here. As most Dutch graves, this grave is leased. My grandparents have paid the lease since the first burial in 1941. When my grandmother died in 2007, the family paid a few decades ahead, but after that the lease will expire and the grave...
