Tolsteeg cemetery

The Tolsteeg cemetery in Utrecht is a huge cemetery that opened in the early 1930s. It has been in continuous use since then. Today I will show you around some of the older sections. In the next posts we will look at a few recent graves, so that we can see how graveyard fashion evolved since then.

Note the absence of mausoleums and big statues, the graves are quite sober: either a flat tombstone or a headstone. Another point to notice is that the graves are in tidy rows along the paths. When it’s your turn to be buried, you will be allotted the next available plot (unless you have a family grave).

All the grave markers on the photos are from the 1930s.
