Old Public Cemetery, Zeist

Old Public Cemetery, Zeist

For a long time, people buried their dead in and around the church. That stopped in the early 19th century, when new regulations stipulated that burial sites had to be out of town. In 1830, the town Zeist opened a brand new cemetery that complied with the new rules.

This cemetery is now known as the Oude Algemene Begraafplaats (Old Public Cemetery). Originally out of town, it is now in the middle of the ever expanding city Zeist. It closed its doors in 1965, and afterwards was neglected for many years. But recently the entrance building and parts of the cemetery were restored to its former glory. Graves are maintained again. Some graves are covered to protect them from the elements. And this graveyard is now a nice place for a graveyard rabbit like me to roam around and take photos.

I will soon start sharing photos of individual graves, with genealogical data when possible. For now, enjoy the photo impression.
