Marriage of Jan Bollebakker and Hendrikje Plaat

Marriage of Jan Bollebakker and Hendrikje Plaat

This is the court marriage of my 5th great-grandparents, Jan Cornelisse Bollebakker and Hendrikje Lammertse Plaat. They married on 13 November 1778 in Hilversum.

Note the middle names of the two spouses: They are patronymics, i.e. the names of their fathers (Jan Bollebakker, son of Cornelis, and Hendrikje Plaat, daughter of Lammert).

Why a court marriage? Simple: In the time of the Dutch republic people could choose between a Dutch Reformed marriage and a court marriage. Catholics, Jews and Baptists would probably have a ceremony in their own community, but for a legal marriage they had to go to court or a Dutch Reformed church. Jan and Hendrikje were catholic and chose for a court marriage.
