Artist Willem Marinus Dudok
Title Raadhuis
Year 1931
Location Hilversum

Willem Marinus Dudok (1884-1974) was a Dutch modernist architect. His main influences were the Amsterdam School, and especially the work of Hendrik Petrus Berlage. Most of his work is in Hilversum, where he became the City Architect in 1928. Dudok left his mark on the town: He designed dozens of public buildings (many of then landmarks), but also complete neighborhoods.

The Raadhuis (town hall) in Hilversum is Dudok’s masterpiece. Dudok designed it in 1923-1924, but building did not start until 1927. The town hall was officially opened on 31 July 1931.

The town hall is build entirely in brick (yellow bricks of an unusual size especially created for Dudok’s town hall). The asymmetrical use of geometrical forms – a common theme in Dudok’s work – is very obvious in this building. Every detail was designed and decided by Dudok – the furniture, the clocks, even the chairman’s hammer that the mayor used.
