St Barbara Cemetery, Utrecht

St Barbara Cemetery, Utrecht

Before Christmas we visited the Tolsteeg cemetery, in Utrecht. We visited an old section, with graves from the 1930s, and a new section, with recent graves. We saw that most graves were quite sober. Graves had a flat tombstone or a headstone, but there were no mausoleums, no abris, no big statues.

Today we will start our visit to the Catholic cemetery St. Barbara, also in Utrecht. Graves in St. Barbara are a lot more varied than in Tolsteeg, sometimes even extravagant. There are statues, abris and large memorials.

St Barbara was opened in 1875, but there are very few 19th century graves still in existence. There are several graves from the first quarter of the 20th century, though.

Today I will leave you with this photo impression. In the next few posts we will visit some of the special graves and sections of St Barbara.
